It took just two centuries for what was originally a sleepy fishing village called Brighthelmstone to transform into the tourist mecca Brighton is today.
It all started with Dr Richard Russell, an advocate of the healing powers of seawater, the doctor moved to the area in the 1750s, building a large for himself and his patients on the waterfront.
Thirty years later Brighton attracted royal attention, when the then-Prince of Wales (later King George IV) started holidaying there in secrecy with his mistress.
The royal connection led to the construction of one of Brighton’s landmarks – the wildly-extravagant Indo-Gothic style Royal Pavilion, designed by John Nash.
The advent of the Industrial Revolution and steam power led to the first rail links being constructed about 1840 and this heralded the end of Brighton’s isolation and its’ boom time as a British holiday destination.
Marking this transition was the construction in 1891 of the city’s second most-recognizable landmark the Brighton Pier in all its tacky brilliance.
